via Daily Prompt: Imaginary

Hello everyone. Again, the title is just one word. But, it is one of the most mysterious phenomenon of the human mind. Dreams have affected my life in an unexpected way. So, welcome to my dream world.

First things first. Wikipedia told me that dreams are a succession of images, ideas, emotions and sensations that occur involuntarily during certain stages of sleep. I’ve read about dreams in a lot of books. They occur in a stage of sleep called REM. The biggest question about dreaming is: Why do we dream? There isn’t a solid answer, but plenty of theories. Some of them are explained in this video.

It’s said that our subconscious mind affects the content of our dreams. But could it be the other way round? A few years back, I had a dream in which my Physics teacher murdered me. In the upcoming school years, I never really cared about studying Physics. A subject that used to interest me suddenly became a burden, even though it was only just a dream. Was it the reason for my behaviour?

Plus, I’ve noticed one more thing. In your dreams, you often envision familiar places. Like your house, school, office, etc. Has it ever happened that you saw an imaginary place in your dreams, and one day suddenly it appears in front of you? Long time back, I had a dream in which I saw myself floating in a water body, with bamboo houses and brick-red rocks around it. I’m positive that I had never visited that place before. But, 2 months back, I started playing a game called Lost Fountain, in which you have to find clues by clicking different objects. I saw the exact same place from my dreams in the game. How did it happen?

I’ve had some obvious dreams, which reflected the events that occurred in the day, but in a whimsical fashion. A few days back, I was watching a TV series called Scorpion. That day, I had a dream in which there were scorpions all over my house, in different shapes and sizes! Those were some in my chain of crazy dreams.

Have you seen Inception? It’s one of my favourite movies by Christopher Nolan. It’s based on another kind of dreams. Lucid dreaming, when amidst a dream, you realise you are dreaming. After which, you are able to take control of the dream. So cool, isn’t it? I found so many videos on YouTube about lucid dreaming. I want to try it too, but something stops me.

The truth is, I have grown up watching many horror movies like The Ring, The Grudge, Insidious, etc. The images of the ghosts are engraved in my subconscious mind. I can’t “unsee” them now. If I ever have a lucid dream, I don’t know what I will see. I know my fears are imaginary, but will I be able to face them?

I have to take small steps. So, I have started keeping a dream journal. It may give me a better understanding of what my dreams mean.

But here’s something interesting. I have had a lucid dream once. Nothing special about it, I was just sitting on my bed, eating pasta. In the video, they say that you can differentiate between a dream and reality by looking at the time. As I glanced at the clock, I realised I was dreaming. But, the dream didn’t collapse. I stayed there for a while, eating my food, before I woke up. Thank God nothing crawled out from under the bed!

Dreams fascinate me, but they also scare me. Once, in my dream, I shook hands with a ghost, and got chills in my body. There have also been times when I couldn’t differentiate between dream and reality. I hope that in the future, the unknown will fascinate me more that it scares me.

Saying this, I go from here.
